“My Father is a religious conservative and I never actually came out to him. He sort of figured it out. I had been dating and living with another woman and they would come round to visit and we would make a big deal of ‘Oh this is my room, and this is her room’. It was kind of ridiculous but he’s a smart guy. We would have family vacations and he would invite all my brother’s spouses, and my step-brother’s spouse and then he’d say ‘and you can bring your roommate’ and I was like ‘ok!’. He was really nice about the whole thing but I was really fearful about having that discussion with him.
During my first heartbreak I wish I could have talked to my dad about it – he’s just so logical and down to earth. I really wanted to talk to him but I was just terrified it would ruin our relationship but it didn’t. I trusted my instincts in the end.
I got married last year and all my family were there and it was really wonderful and great. I think it’s an evolution for them all really.”
